Site at a Glance

Established: 1952 (Biogal)
Acquired by TAPI: 1995
Plant Size: 200,000 m2

With a history dating back to the 1950s, the manufacturing site in Debrecen has been involved in pharmaceutical production for more than 50 years. Following acquisition of the Hungarian site by Teva in 1995, the TPW Debrecen plant has evolved into the fermentation center of excellence within TAPI. The site is operated by a staff of 650 employees. In the site’s high-capacity fermentors, bacteria and fungi are cultivated under sterile conditions in parallel with special nutrient feedings, while exact temperature, mixing and aeration levels are ensured. These micro-organisms produce precious active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) – such as various cholesterol-lowering agents, antibiotics and immunosuppressants – that are sold in many countries the world over.

In addition to fermentation products, the site develops, produces and markets specialized semi-synthetic products and a large-volume synthetic product. The site’s manufacturing systems are highly automated. The vast experience and world-class professionalism of the production team ensure that TPW Debrecen is a leading manufacturer of generic statins. TAPI in Hungary is also renowned for its R&D expertise in the fields of biological and chemical processes. A large number of the site’s researchers are working on the improvement of varied existing and new technologies. The site is located in Hungary’s second largest city, and is surrounded by a large forest on an area of 200,000 m2.
